Almost every bad Wi-Fi story starts the same way: someone bought a router that promised to cover 3,000 square feet, and it does — in an open field. Your house is not an open field. It has studs, foil-backed insulation, a brick chimney, and if it went up before the war, plaster over wire lath, which is a Faraday cage with wallpaper on it.
So we size coverage from what the walls are made of and how much floor there is, then place the access points against a survey rather than a guess. Wire them back to a switch wherever we reasonably can, because a mesh point that relays over the air spends half its radio time talking to another access point instead of to your laptop.
